Though I'm Happier Now

A graduate of the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee film school Brian James McGuire is a independent film maker, as well as a photographer and businessman.

An Interview with Brian

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Brian and talk about his film making and his current project Though I'm Happier Now.

Interviewer: When did you first get involved with filmmaking?

Brian: In elementary school in Utah the school gave out passes for films each weekend and I went to every one. These weren’t mainstream movies but during winter I was at the movie theatre all week long.

Interviewer: Did you always want to be a filmmaker?

Brian: It wasn’t really until high school that I knew but looking back my favorite toys were all film oriented. The Disney projector that had Fantasia and you could either watch it or project on the wall. I never watched it on the little screen..always on the wall.

Interviewer: When did you decide to write your first script? 

Brian: In high school I started writing really really pitiful poetry, then pitiful stories and finally started on films. At first it was more blueprint writing instead of in-depth stories.

Interviewer After high school you went to University of Wisconsin Film School..tell me about that.

Brian: It was fantastic. You don’t have to have a reason to take the camera out. UWM will give it to you without already having a script. They give you an opportunity  to learn on your own and still get the help you need.

Interviewer: Did film school prepare you for making movies?

Brian: It did. A lot of young filmmakers think that life is the school...its not. You’ve got to know the rules to break the rules and film school is where you learn the rules.
